Dear Ninja Rat,

I was originally scared when you popped out of the hummus restaurant door.  However, after you ran down the street and tried to ninja jump across the open metal cellar doors, I realized you were awesome.  Watching you cling to the door with your back foot was the best part of my day.  Until you fell and hit the man exiting the cellar.  Then that was the best part of my day.

Love,

The librarian screaming while carrying her pizza and watching you

Vicki Soto Memorial 5k

The first of November marked a really special 5k for me–it was a fundraiser for the Vicki Soto Memorial Scholarship.  For those who don’t remember, she was the young teacher who was killed during the Sandy Hook shooting.  All the money raised by the run went towards the scholarship given to teachers to go to school for their degrees.  It meant a lot to me that I ran it.

Here’s our before photo:

2014-11-01 10.03.15It was FREEZING.  It was below 40 degrees, it was raining and even snowing at some points (hence Christian’s sheltered face).  The race itself was beautiful.  It ran through the town of Stratford, CT, and most of the homes had left water and snacks for the runners.  Other houses had music planning for us, and others just had signs that reminded everyone just how much Vicki Soto was adored.  It was touching.

After the race, there was a ton of delicious things for us to eat and drink.  Pizza, and bread, and granola bars, and beer–it was amazing.  The turnout was incredible.

There’s no post-race photos because I forgot to take one.  I do have a hilarious set of me eating some of the garlic bread we got and Nick eating the granola bar:

It was the first race I ran the entire 5k, which marked such a huge step for me.  I had never until that moment ran a whole race.  Of course I freaked out.

Here’s my race stats:

Total distance: 3.16 miles

Total time: 45:14

Pace: 14:20 min/mi (1 minute, 1 second faster than the last race)

Place in Race: 1403 out of 2169 runners

For the record, Nick came in 1692, and finished in 50:13–not bad, eh?

I Have the Best Friends

I asked all my friends to send me moments that give them hope that I would be able to share on this blog.  My friend Ryan was the first one to respond–and boy did he.  He performed a song (which has become my favorite of what he’s ever done).  It put a huge smile on my face, and it reminded me that the universe was kind to me when it gave me my friends.  Enjoy!

Electric Run 5k

Nick and I ran the Electric Run back at the start of September.  I had about a week of running in me at the time.  It was crazy fun, and we loved the whole thing–here are some photos from the run.

As per tradition, pre-race photo:

It was raining, hence the angry face.  Then we had to wait for the race to begun, and we had bought a ton of lights, so we were distracted like children.

The track was lit up by lots of cool displays, and was just genuinely awesome.  Here’s some pics from the actual race:

15 Things I’m Learning While Running

1. I can feel my leg muscles and I like them.

2. I get a little faster each time I run.

3. Every time I’m half-way through running a new long distance, I think I can’t do it.  And then I do it.

4. Some runners use the wrong lane and they’re the worst.

5. Some walkers with baby strollers use the wrong lane and pretend to not see you.  They deserve that unintentional shoulder check.

6. Slow runners are pretty rad and really nice when you talk to them.

7. Elite runners are pretty rad and really inspiring when you talk to them.

8. No, seriously, touch my calves.  They’re awesome.

9. Marathons are scary, but I want to do one more than anything.

10. I really, really love race bling.

11. I want a medal so bad.

12. Seeing all my race bibs on my fridge makes me feel more powerful than anything else.

13. Beating personal records makes me cry a lot.

14. I have a lot of running equipment now–I feel like a cool kid when I wear some of it.

15. A pending injury is terrifying.
