The Eternal Smile

The Eternal Smile

Gene Luen Yang

This graphic novel is made of three stories.  The common theme between them all is living in worlds that are illusions–either by our own design or ones that are the work of others.  All of the characters in the stories come across the illusions and break out of them, which perhaps is a message to us that our fantasies are fine but have the potential to hinder us from real life if we don’t keep them in check.

The frog story was a tad obnoxious–maybe it was too long or maybe I just really hated the characters.  Either way, I couldn’t wait for it to be over.  On the other hand, I loved the tale about the woman who falls in love with the “Nigerian prince.”  I found it very sad and touching.  I especially loved the color pages when she goes off with her prince to live happily ever after.  Very beautiful.
Individually two of the three stories were great.  Collectively, this graphic novel was another awesome read.  If you liked Yang’s other work, American Born Chinese, then you’ll definitely enjoy this one.  It’s another entertaining graphic novel.  Grab a copy!
