I’m sure I’m not the only one who stacks books to be read in their rooms. This card comes from California, and reminds me that the habits I think are weird are shared by many others.

The Dark and Hollow Places
Carrie Ryan
This volume certainly makes up for the bummer of a second volume in this series. We’re back with the crew, with the addition of Annah. I really like her, and I was beyond glad to get rid of Gabry as a narrator and main character. I was tired of her sheltered and silly reactions to the situations she found herself in.
In this volume, we learn more about Catcher, Elias and the world that has tried to survive the “Return.” I was hoping for more beyond the ending that we were given, but I’ll be satisfied with it if I have to. Also, the best part of reading this was the major freak-out I had at the dinner table when I figured out exactly where in New York all the places in the story were in our time. It was so exciting! If anyone wants to discuss this, I’ll happily explain my theory (I’m totally right).
All in all, it was worth a terrible second book to get to this third book. Annah is a great, realistic and great female lead that everyone can relate to. She’s strong, she’s brave, and above all, she’s perfectly flawed in ways readers would understand. Also, there are zombies in the subways. That’s terrifying. Go read!
Wet Paint
I’ve been doing really well in the city: I’ve dropped my toothbrush in the toilet and broken about six umbrellas. I’m grand. Next on the list is discovering why I shouldn’t lean against anything while waiting for my train.
My commute to school is long and most of the time, I’m already exhausted when I start. I’m usually reading a book on these rides, which makes the ride and wait completely bearable (and sometimes fun). While waiting for the M train, I opened my book and leaned against a wall. I didn’t realize it had just been painted until the train arrived and I stood up to a cccrrrrrrkkkk sound. Awesome. Take a look:
I’m keeping it. I don’t feel as bad as I should however, because even though the paint ruined my jacket, I ruined the paint as well. There was a nice shoulder-shaped mark left on the wall. Take that, subway!
Week Eighty
Oh man, oh man. EIGHTY. I stayed the same this week, which was a tad disappointing. I think I may have found out why I was up and down all those weeks–I haven’t been giving peas the points they deserve. Weird, huh? Peas have defeated me. It’s okay now though–I am counting all the peas I eat, and everything should even out for this week. I hope.
Beyond this, I’m making tons of hats and look! I got a new domain name for the site. I like this one a ton better. I bought a candle and it sounds just like a fireplace. I am massively pleased. I think this is all I have to report for now. Have a great week!
Thank you, Nick!
I recently bought a new domain name because I wanted a change. And then I broke everything. Seriously–everything was broken. But thanks to Nick, the site is up and running and the world is a good place. He patiently dealt with my crippling ignorance when it comes to how the inside of websites work, and he even bothered the company that hosts me so they’d fix whatever was wrong with my blog. He’s a blog hero! Thanks, Nick! You’re lovely.
Also, how awesome am I with paint? It’s like a kindergartner helped me, haha.
Transplanted American
Asparagus Mush Recipe
Yes, it looks nasty. I know. But it tastes so good! Here’s what you’ll need:
Fresh asparagus
Mushrooms (I used canned)
Feta cheese (I used reduced fat)
Garlic bread crumbs
Start by cooking the asparagus. They’ll take the longest to cook. I found they were best if broken into smaller pieces. You can just snap them while raw. And speaking of snapping them make sure you cut the tough ends off. I learned that the hard (haha, a pun) way!
After the asparagus is done, mix in the mushrooms and feta cheese. Here’s another lesson I learned: bread crumbs should be added last or it will get soggy and adopt the nasty mushy look (as seen in the picture).
If you’re a garlic person, you should put some fresh garlic in. I also added crushed red pepper in there to give it a little kick. This took me no time at all to make, but I loved it as a side. Enjoy!
Further Library Delay
I am extending the break to January, when I will have a ton of free time to devote to writing posts. Because I know I’ve been nothing but disappointing since school started, I am going to give you something else: a story!
The other night, Simon was sleeping on my bed while I worked on typing my NaNo novel. After much effort, wiggling and growling, he was able to roll himself into a cocoon of blanket. I thought it was adorable, so I took a picture:
This was super cute until I had to go to bed myself. He happened to pick the space where I sleep as his nap spot, so I called his name, thinking he’d get up and move. I was completely ignored. I started shaking him, and yelling, and tickling his ears and poking his nose. Nothing. He growled a few times because I was annoying him with the skill of a two year old, but he refused to move.
Finally, I gave up and yanked the blanket off him. With a sigh, he rolled over, leaving me with this:
Nope, that’s fine Simon. I don’t need to put my legs anywhere. I can sleep sitting where I am.
I had to literally roll him over until he was on the other side of the bed. And then once the lights were off, he crawled back to me and decided my legs were the best place for him to sleep.
30 Days of Night: Return To Barrow (Volume Three)
30 Days of Night: Return to Barrow (Volume Three)
Steve Niles
This book only slightly follows what happened in the first two volumes, or at least that’s how it seems. We’re back in Barrow for another dark season, but now the residents are prepared. The art is the same–which, while it’s not my favorite, is beginning to grow on me. I’d much rather it be consistent artwork I don’t enjoy than art that changes from volume to volume.
There is a pleasant surprise at the end of the story and though I guessed it early in the volume, it was still nice to see. I liked the quick, simple ways the author tied this volume in with the first volume. They were subtle and very well done. This volume fits very nicely in with the series and made me eagerly look forward to reading the next one. I highly recommend this series to those who are a fan of bloody, violent, vampire tales.
Potty Mouth
On Friday something happened to me that had never happened before in my entire life. While trying to brush my teeth, I ninja flung my toothbrush into the toilet. And yes, it wedged itself in as far as it could physically go. Yes, I stuck my hand in there to get it out. I’m still a little grossed out.
I don’t know why I thought it vitally important that I keep a picture of it, but at that moment that seemed more pressing than fetching it out of the bowl, so that’s why this evidence exists. Enjoy.
