30 Days of Night (Volume One)

30 Days of Night (Volume One)

Steve Niles

I know this graphic novel has been made into a movie, though I’m not sure if it’s just this first volume or the entire series.  I’m going to guestimate that it’s just the first volume since there’s quite a few that follow.  The cover is what drew me to pick this one up initially–isn’t it awesome?

The art of the series looks very much like the cover.  It’s not clear for about 85% of the volume exactly what’s going on, but by the abundance of red splashes everywhere, I knew people were being eaten (also, isn’t that the plot of all vampire stories?  Om nom nom).  This got a bit frustrating because the story had the potential to be really scary and gory.  Though I feel a lot of action and suspense was skimmed over, I still found myself on the edge of my seat for most of the middle of the story.

The extras include some sneak peaks of two later volumes, which I found a little confusing because I thought they were just short stories.  Whoops.  I’m not a fan of the art at all, but because the story made my heart race, I’ll pick up volume two.
